Peter, that is pretty much the discount we get here but I have not heard of any lots of Herefords topping the market in California. What is it about those Herefords that makes them worth so valued by the buyers?
They are what we call high mountain cattle that are bred in the alpine country along the border of New South Wales and Victoria. Traditionally horned Herefords as the cows could protect their calves from wild dogs that inhabit the National parks where they grazed during the summer. Great constitutional cattle but alas the tradition of grazing in the National Parks is slowly being fazed out due to pressure from the environmentalists .

I know exactly what you are talking about. My family used to summer cows on a mountain range in the high Sierra Nevada Mountains. My grandfather would tell me stories of how they would drive the cattle up to the mountains on horseback. When it got dark they would light a candle put it in a tin cup with holes punched in the sides and drive the cows by candlelight. When it was time to drive the cows home, the last thing they would to would be to light the brush on fire. That was before polywire or herbicides existed, so fire was the only tool they had. Then they would have a big drive down the mountain and the cows knew the way back home and would separate themselves from the herd and make there way home without needing to be sorted out. The last time we took cows to the mountains was when I was only a few years old and dealing with the forest service and campers made it not worth the effort. Between enviromentalism and 40 acre homesites, it is sad how much land in California hasn't been grazed or logged for decade. And we are clueless why we are getting so many wildfires. Rather than accept that maybe ranchers and loggers aren't bad people, the environmentalist blame global warming and by extension cow farts.
The Greens seem to think that cattle ranchmen are out to destroy the very environment that they earn a living off, nothing could be further from the truth. Unfortunately the lies and untruths pedaled by the lefties seems to carry more public influence than the truth. It seems most people will believe BS rather than go to the trouble of doing a little bit of research .
While I’m on my soapbox yesterday in 2 of the major cities in this country there was mass protests and demonstrations by left wing vegans and animal activists trying to close down abattoirs, there has been properties invaded by these idiots ( mainly intensive farms) who knows where it will all end. With an election coming up we certainly need strong government but unfortunately I don’t think we are going to get it!
