Some of my better cows go back to HB Piegan 129 (sire of the Don Piegan 62 bull) and Mark Piegan 17 (his grandsire)....Mostly Errol Fritz breeding....a lot of that Piegen stuff went on into Hartland - Lincoln Breeding that was the base of some Holden cows....
In fact, I have been line breeding to that cow family a bit....

An Argentine bull, Niagara Selecto 3 born in 1992. Same prefix all the way back, except for Big Northern in the fourth generation. An outstanding herd that was dispersed after Mr. Simón Pereyra Yraola death.
One needs to remember that the biggest change in cattle today over 50 years ago is defects. We have bred many defects out by selection and culling. If you choose to go back and use one of the older bulls I believe you should be very careful until you know what you actually have.
Funny you should say that, cause I see more defects creeping into the breed today than I ever saw 40 years ago eg. LP, loose sheaths, under shod jaws , incorrect eye setting, feet structure etc. it would seem in the chase for better figures some very fundamental basic structural issues are ignored. 40 years ago that's all the breeders had to go by hence they paid attention to them.
A lot of chrome in the last picture. Just wondering, did a lot of older cattle have a lot of white? I see some today, but not extremely often and not quite as much as the last pic there. I have a few with a bit of chrome but personally do not care for much white as I try to keep mine conservatively marked.
A few years ago, a Hereford Breeder's daughter was here for a visit. She was a retired school teacher and had been away from the Hereford breed and rural life for 20-30 years. She was feeling nostalgic, and asked to see a Hereford World so she could see examples of the breed.
After looking for about 30 seconds, she looked up and exclaimed, " My God, if we had raised something like that, we would have butchered it as soon as possible!"
I might suggest the same for some of the above.
